Yesterday we focused mainly on 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5. Written probably in the late first century by Paul, 2 Timothy is concerned that the community is being attracted by false and misleading teachings that conflict with the truth of the gospel. The sacred writings of Timothy’s childhood were the Hebrew Scriptures, which early Christians understood as leading believers to Christ. By the time of this writing, the gospels may have been circulating. Jewish parents were to begin the education of their children in Torah at age five. The author grounds the authority of the Hebrew Scriptures in divine inspiration and calls the hearers to both faith in Christ Jesus and a life of “every good work.”
Keith in his message to us yesterday explained that the scriptures were very important during Paul’s time for educating and forming faith in believers. Also, how that same same importance should be among us today. How we should stand on the teachings of scripture and the truth of the Gospels. Some may want to change or manipulate the scriptures in order to suit their desires. But we as Christ followers should keep a clear mind and stand firmly on the Good News. Will you? Have a blessed week!
