Luke 16:19-31 evokes our sympathy. It opens the possibility—described as an impossibility—of place-sharing, trading or sharing places with each other. It also echoes a common theme: the pursuit of wealth in this world can lead us into idolatry and away from faith in Christ. Instead, as the reading from 1 Timothy 6:6-19 reminds us, we should pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness, so that there is no “poor man named Lazarus” dying at our gates.
Yesterday in Keith’s message he reiterated that point by illustrating to us by use of a rope, just how much of our existence is here and now in this life and just how much is in eternity with God. Our life here is very short but our existence with God is far greater. Therefore we should live in such a way that points us and others to Jesus and His righteousness. This by helping others, perhaps less fortunate than ourselves, in love and caring. Showing them what the kingdom of God is and what it’s like.
After all, the greatest treasure—our eternal salvation has already been procured for us through faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection. Knowing this, we can share all we have with our neighbors, even our very place and salvation, confident that God will continue to provide for our needs. So, will you trust God and share with others? Have a blessed week!
